AGM & 20 Years Celebration

The Bact AGM was held on April 28th and also celebrated 20 official years of our organisation.  It was a lovely occasion which was attended by the trustees (past and present), passengers, some staff (past and present), and representatives from both Norfolk and Suffolk County Councils.  Lots of memories were shared and tributes were paid to Geoff Banham who started the ball rolling back in 1993 working from his home in conjunction with Waveney area community transport.

Gwen Harris (98 years young) told everyone how community transport has helped her to lead a full life – with drivers more like friends and being able to get out for hairdressing appointments, to visit friends and attend clubs.  Gwen was then asked to cut cake and we continued the celebrations with lots of talk, tea and cake!

If anyone would like a copy of the AGM report, then please let me know.
We could really do with a representative on the committee from Lowestoft.  We meet about once every 6 – 8 weeks.  If you are interested, then please let me know.

Appealing for people to help people

On Tuesday 20th December 2016, over 8 bact staff, volunteers and trustees spent the day at Morrisons in Beccles raising awareness of bact community transport and its constant need for new volunteer drivers.  Bact is grateful to Morrisons for allowing this to happen, which also raised £287.65 in donations.  Over 100 people stopped to talk to us during the day and enquire about our transport services.

bact operates two key services:

  • Dial a Ride (door to door service using minibuses)
  • Community car service.

Over the last six months bact services have carried out over 22,000 passenger journeys in Waveney and South Norfolk districts.  Passengers are taken to day centres, for medical appointments, for social reasons and practical ones like shopping.  Many passengers struggle to leave their homes without the help of bact’s volunteers.

Both services rely entirely on volunteers to transport passengers, but bact has a shortage of volunteer drivers in the Waveney area and urgently needs more. Volunteers either drive their own cars with a mileage allowance of 45p per mile, or drive bact’s vehicles, which are adapted to take wheelchairs and carry those needing more assistance.  Some volunteers drive for us every day of the week whereas others only drive a few hours a month; the arrangement might be on a regular or irregular basis, bact adapts to suit the volunteers.

Debbie Blowers, bact manager said, “Our fantastic volunteers come from all walks of life; what unites them in the desire to help others.  We would love to hear from anyone interested in driving for us: we have the passengers and the vehicles – we just need more drivers.  Many of our volunteers join us after retiring; it provides them with a new purpose in life.  If you know someone who might be interested, please tell them about bact.”

All volunteers are trained and complete a DBS check.
